A platinum catalyst bed strips the kinetic bottleneck out of fuel-cell assembly: cells seal at better than twice the pace of a conventional line on well under half the hydrogen. The bed fouls and is consumed every run — a bargain while platinum is glutted, roughly a wash at full platinum prices.
